Room 414 of this historic hotel is where on November 23rd, 1936, the 25 year old legendary blues guitarist Robert Johnson changed the course of popular music. His largest body of work was recorded here from November 23-27.

On November 23, 2001, the San Antonio Blues Society and the Robert Johnson Blues Society erected a memorial marker in the hotel lobby commemorating the Gunter Hotel as the site of Robert Johnson’s historic recording sessions.  The lobby also has display cases featuring a brief history, photos and his 78’s.  Johnson only recorded twice for a total of 29 songs and died in 1938 at the age of 27.

The fourth floor suite can be booked for the night and the Johnson-themed “Bar 414” serves cocktails named after Johnson’s songs.
