The 16-foot tall Muscle Shoals sculpture is the second of four “city sculptures” that are a part of a plan to erect a total of 11 monumentally-scaled sculptures in the Muscle Shoals area of Alabama, each honoring the area’s legendary music heritage. In addition to the 4 city sculptures, this civic art project will ultimately include 7 even larger sculptures arranged in a waterfront garden setting in Florence’s Veterans Park. The Muscle Shoals sculpture depicts a bass player sitting on a session stool with his bass guitar, someone who might have performed here during the heyday of the Muscle Shoals sound. It represents no particular musician. The artwork is semi-abstract in style. Near the sculpture is a large panel etched with historic photographs. It also includes a narrative explaining the origin of the Singing River name and describing the role the city played in creating the renowned Muscle Shoals sound.
